Kubernetes gets recommended constantly, but for many small teams it adds more operational overhead than it removes.
Kubernetes shines when you have multiple services that need independent scaling, frequent deployments across a fleet of containers, and a team dedicated to managing infrastructure. It automates scaling, recovery, and rollout in ways that are genuinely hard to replicate manually at that scale.
Running Kubernetes well requires ongoing expertise — cluster management, networking, security patching, monitoring. For a team of two or three engineers already stretched across product work, that overhead can outweigh the benefits.
Platform-as-a-service options, managed container services, or even simple VM-based deployments with solid CI/CD can handle a surprising amount of scale without the operational burden of self-managed Kubernetes.
