Setting Up Automated Backups for Your Production Database

Backups are one of those things teams assume are handled until the moment they desperately need one that either doesn't exist or doesn't restore properly.

Automate the schedule, don't rely on memory

Manual backups get forgotten, especially under deadline pressure. Automated daily backups, running on a schedule independent of anyone remembering to trigger them, are the baseline every production database needs.

Store backups somewhere separate

Backups stored on the same server as the database they're protecting don't protect against server failure or accidental deletion. Storing backups in separate, redundant storage is essential, not optional.

Test restores regularly, not just backups

A backup that has never been restored is unverified. Periodically actually restoring a backup to a test environment confirms the backup process works end-to-end, not just that a file gets created.

Consider point-in-time recovery for critical data

Daily backups mean losing up to a full day of data in a worst-case scenario. For applications where that's unacceptable, point-in-time recovery capabilities let you restore to almost any specific moment, not just the last scheduled snapshot.

Document the recovery process

During an actual incident is the worst time to figure out how backups work. A written, tested recovery runbook means anyone on the team can execute a restore under pressure, not just whoever originally set it up.
