Technical SEO for Lucknow Websites: Fixing What Google Can't See

Many Lucknow businesses invest in content and backlinks but see little progress because of technical problems they don't know exist. Google may be wasting time crawling old broken URLs, ignoring important pages, or indexing duplicate versions of the same page. Technical SEO fixes the foundation so everything else can work.

How Google Discovers and Indexes Pages

Google discovers URLs through links and sitemaps, crawls them by visiting them, and then decides whether to index them. Pages not indexed cannot appear in search results. Google Search Console's Pages report shows which pages are indexed and why others aren't.

Common Indexing Statuses Explained

Discovered, currently not indexed

Google knows the URL exists but hasn't crawled it yet. Common on new websites or sites where Google limits crawling due to slow servers, low perceived quality or wasted crawl activity.

Crawled, currently not indexed

Google visited the page but chose not to index it, often because content is thin, duplicate or not valuable enough.

Not found (404)

URLs that return errors. Often old pages from a previous website.

Excluded by noindex

Pages with a noindex tag. Fine for admin or thank-you pages, a problem if applied to important pages by mistake.

Fixing Old URLs After a Website Rebuild

When businesses replace an old website, old URLs often remain in Google's memory. Google keeps trying them and finds 404 errors. The fix:

  • Export the list of 404 URLs from Search Console
  • Redirect each old URL with a 301 redirect to the most relevant new page
  • For pages with no equivalent, return a 410 status to signal permanent removal
  • Avoid redirecting everything to the homepage, which Google may treat as a soft 404
  • Validate the fix in Search Console

Server Speed and Crawling

Google adjusts crawling based on how quickly and reliably your server responds. Slow responses or frequent errors reduce crawling. Check Crawl Stats in Search Console for average response time and host status. Improving hosting, caching and server configuration can increase how much Google crawls.

Sitemaps

Your XML sitemap should list only canonical, indexable pages returning a 200 status. Remove redirected, noindexed or broken URLs. Submit the sitemap in Search Console.

Duplicate URLs and Canonicals

The same page accessible at multiple URLs, with and without trailing slashes, with www and without, HTTP and HTTPS, splits signals. Enforce one version with redirects and use canonical tags pointing to the preferred URL. Make sure canonical tags point to URLs that actually work.

Robots.txt

Robots.txt controls which paths crawlers can access. A single wrong line can block your entire site. Block admin and private areas, not important pages, CSS or JavaScript files.

Structured Data

Schema markup helps Google understand your business, articles, products, FAQs and reviews. Use LocalBusiness or Organization schema, Article schema for blogs, and Product schema for e-commerce.

Internal Linking

Important pages should be linked from your homepage, navigation and related content. Pages with few internal links are harder for Google to find and appear less important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I click "Validate Fix" in Search Console?

Yes, after you have actually fixed the issue. Validation asks Google to recheck the affected URLs.

Do 404 errors hurt my rankings?

404s for genuinely removed pages are normal. But many 404s from old URLs can waste crawling, and lost redirects lose value from old links.

How often should I check Search Console?

At least monthly, and after any major website change.
