Moving to a New Website Without Losing Google Rankings: A Migration Guide

Replacing an old WordPress site with a modern custom website, changing platforms, or restructuring URLs is common as businesses grow. But many Lucknow businesses launch a beautiful new website and then watch their Google traffic fall. The cause is almost always the same: old URLs were not handled properly. Here is a step-by-step guide to migrating safely.

Why Rankings Drop After Migration

Google ranks specific URLs. When old URLs disappear without redirects, Google finds 404 errors, drops those pages from results, and loses the signals they had built, including links from other websites. Google may also keep crawling dead URLs for months, spending crawl activity on errors instead of your new pages.

Before Launch

1. List every old URL

Collect URLs from your old sitemap, Google Search Console's performance and pages reports, analytics and a crawl of the old site. Include blog posts, category pages, images and PDFs that receive traffic.

2. Map old URLs to new URLs

Create a spreadsheet with each old URL and its best new equivalent. Match by content, not convenience. An old "contact-with-us" page maps to the new "contact-us" page; an old "graphics-design" service page maps to the closest new design service page.

3. Decide on removed pages

If an old page has no equivalent, decide whether to create one or let it go. For pages that are permanently gone, a 410 Gone status tells Google the removal is intentional.

4. Preserve valuable content

Pages that ranked well should keep their core content, titles and headings, improved rather than discarded.

At Launch

5. Implement 301 redirects

Permanent redirects pass users and most ranking signals to the new URL. Avoid redirect chains where one redirect leads to another.

6. Handle URL variations

Decide on one version for trailing slashes, www, and HTTPS, and redirect all variations to it. A request for "/services/" should redirect to "/services" if that is your preferred version.

7. Don't redirect everything to the homepage

Mass redirects to the homepage are often treated as soft 404s and lose value. Redirect to relevant pages or use 410.

8. Update internal links and canonicals

Internal links should point directly to new URLs. Canonical tags must point to working URLs on the new site, not to old paths.

9. Submit the new sitemap

Submit an XML sitemap containing only valid new URLs in Search Console.

After Launch

10. Monitor Search Console

Check the Pages report for new 404s and the Crawl Stats report for response codes. Fix missed redirects quickly, then use Validate Fix for 404 issues.

11. Request indexing for key pages

Use URL Inspection to request indexing for your most important pages.

12. Keep redirects permanently

Leave redirects in place for at least a year, preferably permanently. Removing them early recreates 404 errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Google take to process redirects?

It varies. Important pages may update within days or weeks; less important URLs can take longer.

Should I use 404 or 410 for removed pages?

Both are acceptable. 410 signals permanent removal more explicitly.

Will traffic dip temporarily?

Small fluctuations are common, but a properly executed migration should recover and often improve.
